Eight riders out of Tour de Hongrie as mass crash topples dozens of riders
Briefly

During the Tour de Hongrie, a significant crash occurred involving a large section of the peloton, mirroring an incident at the Giro d'Italia. Despite the crash resulting in several riders from Team Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe abandoning, including three serious injuries, Danny van Poppel secured victory and extended his lead in the race. He expressed mixed feelings about the win, showing concern for his injured teammates, particularly Frederik Wandahl, who was hospitalized but in stable condition, along with other riders who faced various injuries.
Van Poppel reflected on the day's events: "It's a day of mixed emotions. Of course, I'm really happy about the win - especially because of the hard work of my teammates. But it’s hard to celebrate when they are gone."
Witnessing the crash, van Poppel stated: "The fall at the head of the bunch sparked a massive chain reaction, with riders spilling into the culverts on both sides of the road."
The race organizers confirmed concerning news when they stated, "Wandahl was taken by helicopter to hospital and is in stable condition according to race organisers."
Discussing the circumstances of the crash, van Poppel noted, "It happened in a straight but wind-swept section of road when a teammate lost control due to either wind or inattention."
