A petrol station exploded in Rome's Prenestino neighbourhood, injuring at least 10 people, including eight police officers. The explosion occurred shortly after 8am, shaking buildings and igniting several cars. Witnesses reported gas smells prior to hearing a loud bang, followed by a larger explosion. Debris covered the area, described as looking like a battlefield. In response to the explosion, the nearby Teano metro station was closed by Rome's public transport agency Atac. "I woke up with a start, I heard a very loud explosion, it sounded like a bomb," one witness told La Repubblica.
According to national broadcaster Rai, the explosion occurred after a petrol pump disconnected from its supply tank.
The explosion occurred at a gas station on Via dei Gordiani, in Rome's eastern Prenestino neighbourhood, shortly after 8am, according to local news reports.
The surrounding area "looks like a battlefield, full of debris. Sheet metal flew," another said.
