At least 40 people drowned when a wooden boat capsized while transporting over 50 farmers across a river near Gummi town in northwest Nigeria.

Local officials expressed that this incident follows a similar one last month where nearly 30 farmers drowned in an overloaded boat in Sokoto state.
With only two boats available for over 900 farmers, overcrowding is a common issue on Nigeria's dangerous waterways, contributing to frequent accidents.
