Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko is set to continue his 31-year rule, reportedly winning the latest election with 87.6% of the votes. Facing minimal genuine opposition, as challengers have either fled or are imprisoned, Lukashenko stood against candidates loyal to him and one critic, Hanna Kanapatskaya. While asserting that Belarus exhibits a 'brutal democracy,' he also implied that dissent leads to imprisonment. Opposition leaders, like Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, condemned the election process as a farce, calling for the liberation of political prisoners and fair elections, emphasizing the long-standing issues of authoritarian governance in Belarus.
The previous vote was denounced by outside observers as fraudulent.
Opposition leader-in-exile Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya described Sunday's election as 'a Lukashenko ritual' and branded him 'a criminal who has seized power.'
