Efforts to form a coalition government in Austria have stalled, highlighting the challenges faced by the Freedom Party's leader Herbert Kickl after his party's significant electoral success. Despite winning 29% of the vote in September, the Freedom Party could not reach an agreement with the conservative People's Party due to significant disagreements on issues like migration. Previous attempts at coalition-building have also failed, leading to uncertainty about the country's future governance. President Alexander Van der Bellen is set to engage with political leaders to explore potential solutions.
"Herbert Kickl got the most votes, but that doesn't justify his taking all the power," said Christian Stocker, chair of the People's Party, emphasizing the need for balance in power distribution.
"Liberal democracy thrives on compromise, on balancing different interests," said President Alexander Van der Bellen, underscoring the importance of collaboration in politics for societal stability.
