Vienna is taking proactive measures to reduce its dependency on Russian natural gas by implementing a geothermal energy project. A drilling rig, just a short distance from a metro station, will harness hot water from underground to provide energy for heating 20,000 households, thereby decreasing natural gas consumption and cutting carbon emissions. OMV, the leading company in this initiative, has expressed that this marks a pivotal change in their operations, moving forward with energy independence and sustainability.
Instead of oil, the wells will pump close to 1.7 million gallons a day of hot water from deep underground, significantly reducing Vienna's natural gas consumption.
This geothermal energy will initially warm 20,000 households in Vienna, reducing reliance on Russian gas and cutting carbon dioxide emissions.
For us it's a new chapter. For the first time in six decades, we no longer have Russian gas in our portfolio, said OMV's chief executive, Alfred Stern.
Alfred Stern described this project as a turning point, emphasizing that Vienna is headed toward new horizons in energy independence.
