At least 226 killed in floods as Typhoon Yagi wreaks havoc in Myanmar
Briefly

The floods brought on by Typhoon Yagi have killed at least 226 people in Myanmar, with the death toll potentially rising as many remain missing. The storm, impacting regions already affected by conflict, has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in a country where a third of the population relies on aid.
Areas hardest hit include Naypyidaw and Mandalay, where severe flooding submerged approximately 40,000 acres of agricultural land and damaged around 26,700 houses, according to OCHA. With 388 relief camps established, the situation remains dire, particularly for displaced families.
UNICEF reported that many regions affected by flooding are now difficult to access due to damaged roads and disrupted telecom and electricity networks. This exacerbates the challenges for displaced people, especially children, who were already struggling amid limited services.
Typhoon Yagi, the strongest storm in Asia so far this year, has not only devastated Myanmar but also caused significant casualties in Vietnam and Thailand, where nearly 300 fatalities were reported from flooding and storm-related incidents.
