The World Food Programme has managed to send a convoy carrying food assistance into the Darfur region of Sudan via the reopened Adre border crossing, temporarily enabling crucial aid delivery to over 13,000 people facing famine.
Despite the temporary reopening of the Adre crossing from Chad, the WFP highlighted that this trickle of aid represents a mere fraction of the assistance needed, with restrictions imposed by the Sudanese army limiting access to much-needed resources.
According to the World Food Programme, more than six million people in Darfur are grappling with food insecurity, amidst a larger crisis affecting around 25 million people throughout Sudan due to ongoing conflict and displacement.
UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric emphasized that the Adre crossing is currently the most efficient way to deliver humanitarian aid to Darfur, highlighting the urgency of addressing widespread starvation caused by ongoing violence.
