Oleg Orlov began his career protesting against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in the 1980s. He joined Memorial, the first and most important human-rights organization in Russia, known for its work revealing past atrocities and monitoring current violations.
On the eve of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the regime shut down Memorial, after 30 years of operation, and also arrested Orlov for criticizing the invasion.
