New York state is advancing plans to construct its first nuclear reactor in fifty years, with several upstate communities expressing interest in hosting it. Currently, the state has 3.4 gigawatts from three reactors near Lake Ontario. Governor Kathy Hochul aims to increase this capacity to 8.4 gigawatts to ensure reliable, emission-free energy. Over twenty companies have submitted proposals to the New York Power Authority, including Constellation and Holtec, with Oswego County being highlighted as a prime location for new nuclear projects.
