The household battery revolution that could change energy bills and the world
Intense heatwaves across Europe and Asia coincided with demolition of two chimneys at Australia’s Liddell power station while an Australian energy minister announced up to a 10% fall in benchmark electricity prices in parts of the country. Australia already leads domestic solar, with panels on one in three homes. Nearly 60% of household-scale battery capacity installed worldwide this financial year is in Australia, with about 415,000 batteries connected since July, roughly one per 25 homes. Industrial-scale battery capacity is rising quickly, with Australia trailing only China and the US after connections more than doubled last year. Battery growth is lowering electricity costs from a grid spanning over 900,000 km from far-north Queensland to Tasmania.
