County officials have confirmed that the air, water, and soil in the vicinity of the Moss Landing Battery Storage facility, following a fire on January 16, are safe for public health. The first phase of cleanup, focusing on delinking accessible batteries, was completed by March 13. Despite progress, the EPA warns of potential flare-ups. The demolition process remains months away as Vistra selects contractors. Community-based environmental sampling continues as the county moves from response to recovery.
County officials emphasized there is currently no risk to public health in the air, water or soil as they continue phase one of cleanup at Moss Landing.
Vistra's senior director stated, 'We are considering demolition vendors at this time and we're going to be very methodical on how to move forward on this process.'
EPA officials warned while delinking reduces the risk of large fires, the potential for additional flare-ups remains, as seen in the February incident.
The county is transitioning from response to recovery, hence continuing sampling through a multi-agency strategy including community surface water sampling.
