Sperm whale carcass that washed up on Nantucket 'far too big' to be removed from beach
"The conclusion was that this whale was far too big, awkward and heavy to remove from the beach,"
"No amount of equipment could pull it off."
"We encourage you to view this magnificent animal with respect and reverence, and within the law,"
"Binoculars would be helpful."
A roughly 50-foot sperm whale weighing about 52 tons (104,000 pounds) washed up on Nantucket's north shore. Marine Mammal Alliance Nantucket (MMAN) determined the carcass is too large, awkward and heavy to remove from the beach. MMAN consulted NOAA and the International Fund for Animal Welfare and concluded a full necropsy on the beach is impossible. The whale has been anchored to prevent it washing back to sea while samples and examinations are planned with off-island experts. NOAA's Office of Law Enforcement removed the whale's jaw to prevent theft of teeth, which are illegal to possess. The public is asked to stay at least 300 feet away.
