Victoria has been battered by some of the most destructive bushfires in its history. Blazes tore through 400,000 hectares, destroyed almost 900 buildings including more than 250 homes, killed over 15,000 livestock and countless wildlife, and claimed the life of cattle farmer Maxwell Hobson. Fires moved with unusual speed, scale and destruction and arrived much earlier than the traditional February peak.
