Seal discovered in London garden as shocked owner says: 'It's a brilliant feeding spot'
"We realised that it's just a brilliant feeding spot for seals. Occasionally they come down from the sea and eat here, and when they are completely satiated, they lie on land to digest. It's really rare but its becoming more common."
"Seals are really frightened of people, much more frightened than we are of them - unless you go up to them, they're dangerous then. Just leave them alone. They're just coming up to feed."
"This particular seal is no stranger to us and going by the recent video only, appears alert and in good body condition. Seals spend time both in the water and hauled out on land to rest. They will return to the water once ready. We have documented sightings of this seal in a few different parts of Thames going back to at least 2023, but have not seen him in this location before. Seals swim large distances and move around regularly. One of our famous seals Freddie in 2021 was documented both in the Netherlands and France."
A woman in Twickenham found a seal in her garden in early January and initially feared it was injured. Locals explained the location is a feeding spot where seals occasionally come ashore to digest after eating. Sightings in the area have increased, with other wildlife also appearing. Residents were advised not to approach seals because they are easily frightened and can become dangerous if provoked. Thames Seal Watch confirmed the individual is known, appears alert and healthy, has been seen in various parts of the Thames since at least 2023, and will return to the water when ready.
