New York's energy policy agency released a draft plan for public comment, acknowledging a need for renewable energy and climate emissions reductions. However, it emphasizes continued reliance on fossil fuels and investments in carbon-intensive infrastructure. Critics argue that the state was already lagging before federal opposition. Alex Beauchamp noted that significant goals will be missed without a plan for recovery. The report states that major fuels, including natural gas and petroleum, will remain crucial to the energy mix through 2040 to ensure reliability and resilience.
"We're missing the goals by a mile; we're just so, so far away," said Alex Beauchamp, Northeast director for Food & Water Watch. "The most damning part of the whole report is they don't have a plan to get back on track."
"All major fuels used in New York today will continue to meaningfully contribute to the state's energy mix through 2040, including electricity, natural gas and petroleum fuels."
The draft plan acknowledges a need for more renewable energy and climate emissions reductions, but it also emphasizes a need to continue relying on fossil fuels.
