Nuclear Bunker Falling Into Ocean
"We live on one of the most eroded coastlines in Europe and this bunker hasn't got long left, perhaps just a few days,"
"We are posting the footage on our YouTube channel and it's getting interest from around the world,"
"it was designed so that people could live inside it and just wait for a nuclear explosion to register and they could tell other people in other bunkers around the country."
"it's a symbol of erosion in this area."
A brick Cold War-era Royal Observer Corps nuclear bunker near Tunstall on the East Yorkshire coast was built around 1959 as a lookout post for nuclear explosions. The bunker now sits precariously at the cliff edge and is days away from falling into the sea as coastal erosion removes the supporting cliff top. Local authorities have warned people to stay clear of the cliff top and the area below the bunker because of collapse risk. An amateur historian has visited and filmed the site daily, posting footage to a YouTube channel that has attracted worldwide interest. Geologists attribute accelerated erosion to rising sea levels from global warming, and about 17 percent of the UK coastline is affected, with communities like Tunstall feeling the impact.
