COP30 convened in Belem on the edge of the Amazon rainforest with negotiators from more than 190 countries aiming to curb record-high emissions and rising global temperatures. Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva called for confronting climate change deniers and declared climate change a present tragedy, warning that the emergency deepens inequality between those who can live with dignity and those who should die. The summit contrasted with a previous opening in Baku that praised oil. UN climate chief Simon Stiell acknowledged progress since the Paris Agreement but said emissions reductions must accelerate rapidly.
