"The ice had probably just frozen over when one of our employees, Danny, spotted Charlie skating and got that photo,"
"Today's opening day and he definitely took advantage of the fresh ice. ... He got the first tracks in our ice rink."
"Guess winter sports season is officially open! #OnlyInTahoe #BearOnIce,"
"Undoubtedly the bear is drawn to the ice rink in search of food, and the odors associated with food and garbage,"
Employees finished preparing the Shops at Heavenly Village skating rink when a black bear named Charlie slid across the ice shortly after 10 p.m. Charlie crawled under roped barriers and crossed the rink despite a "No Skating without Skates" sign. An employee photographed Charlie getting the first tracks on opening-day ice. Black bears are frequently seen at Heavenly Village in late fall and early winter, and the resort area has not reported recent attacks. A prior incident involved a snowboarder colliding with a bear cub without injury. Charlie later returned, likely drawn by food and garbage odors.
