Ireland's only wild bee sanctuary launches public appeal after 'perfect storm' of setbacks
"Run by 'The Bee Guy' Paul Handrick and his wife Clare-Louise, with their four children helping wherever possible, The World Bee Sanctuary in Coolafancy had its future thrown in doubt after a potential source of corporate funding fell through and devastating levels of rainfall left the family with no way to earn income in the short term. A dedicated habitat for native wild bees - particularly bumblebees and solitary bees - against a backdrop of global decline,"
"The sanctuary was established by Paul and Clare-Louise in 2017 when the couple transformed their 55 acres of certified vegan organic land into The Bee Sanctuary of Ireland, later expanding its identity to World Bee Sanctuary. The sanctuary founders describe it as the world's only true native wild bee sanctuary."
""We had a small collaboration sponsorship with Clarins, which kept us going. It wasn't huge, but it was nice. They weren't greenwashing and wanted to support us," Paul said. "That ended, and for the last six months, we were talking to another entity about coming on board. That looked like it was happening, but fell through due to current global uncertainty.""
The World Bee Sanctuary in Coolafancy is run by Paul and Clare-Louise Handrick with help from their four children and occupies 55 acres of certified vegan organic land. The sanctuary focuses on native wild bees, particularly bumblebees and solitary bees, and positions itself as the world's only true native wild bee sanctuary. Around 40% of bee species are considered under threat. The project combines land management, education and advocacy, opening to visiting groups. Funding relied on private sponsorship, visitor income and supporters; a Clarins collaboration ended and another prospective sponsor fell through. Sustained rainfall has blocked access and halted planned work, cutting short-term income.
