Iran war released 5M tons of CO2 in 2 weeks, climate scientists find
"'We estimate that the total oil destroyed at oil storage facilities across the Gulf region and those in oil tankers to be between 2.5 and 5.9 million barrels.'"
"'Airports, military structures, homes, and commercial buildings have either been destroyed or damaged in the conflict.'"
"'This includes 16,191 residential units, 3,384 commercial units, 77 medical centres and 69 schools.'"
"'Israel has bombed several oil storage facilities in Iran including those in Tehran, Shahran, and Aghdasieh.'"
The conflict in Iran from February 28 to March 14 resulted in over five million tons of greenhouse gas emissions. The destruction of homes and buildings contributed 2.4 million tons of CO2, while destroyed fuel added more than 1.8 million tons. The study estimated emissions from five activities, with destroyed infrastructure being the largest contributor. Significant damage occurred to residential units, commercial buildings, medical centers, and schools, alongside oil storage facilities targeted in military actions.
