Indonesians set to face cement giant Holcim in Swiss court DW 12/22/2025
"very pleased"
"This decision gives us the strength to continue our fight,"
"This is good news for us and our families."
The Cantonal Court of Zug admitted a complaint by four Pari Island residents against Holcim, allowing corporate climate litigation to proceed in Switzerland. Plaintiffs say rising sea levels could submerge most of Pari by 2050; the island sits about 1.5 meters above sea level. Plaintiffs demand rapid CO2 cuts of 43% by 2030 and 69% by 2040, compensation for damage, and funding for flood protection. International NGOs supporting the plaintiffs include Swiss Church Aid (HEKS/EPER), the European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights, and WALHI. Holcim plans to appeal and reiterates commitment to net zero by 2050 while urging lawmakers to set implementation paths.
