Global growth in solar "the largest ever observed for any source"
""The absolute increase of solar PV generation in 2025 is the largest ever observed for any source, excluding years marked by rebounds from global economic shocks such as COVID-19.""
""Solar's growth covered a quarter of the rising demand for all forms of energy and over two-thirds of the increased demand for electricity.""
""Batteries were the fastest-growing power technology, with capacity additions rising 40 percent between 2024 and 2025, reaching 110 GW of new capacity last year.""
""The solar boom is the primary reason that carbon-free generating sources were able to grow faster than demand in 2025.""
In 2025, solar power saw the largest increase in generation ever recorded, covering a quarter of rising energy demand and over two-thirds of increased electricity demand. Solar generated over 2,700 terawatt-hours, accounting for more than 8 percent of global electricity production. Thirty countries installed at least a gigawatt of solar, making it the largest grid source by capacity. The growth of solar, alongside battery technology, allows for meeting rising demand without increasing carbon emissions, with batteries growing 40 percent in capacity, surpassing natural gas additions.
