Lisa Garcia grew up in the South Bronx where green space was scarce, playgrounds were mostly cracked pavement, and exhaust-filled air aggravated her asthma. She later connected those health issues to local environmental conditions and spent nearly three decades fighting for environmental justice through courts, laws, and regulations. Garcia helped build EPA initiatives and online maps that displayed block-by-block overlaps of pollution and populations. She served in senior EPA roles across administrations, including Region 2 administrator. Ongoing federal cuts under President Donald Trump's administration have, according to Garcia, undone years of environmental justice work.
