Former president of Colombia Iván Duque will open the Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability's 2025 Climate Impact Speaker Series on Sept. 2 with a fireside chat at Klarman Hall Auditorium at 5 p.m., co-hosted with the Emerging Markets Institute Distinguished Fellows Speaker Series and followed by a reception. Duque led Colombia's renewable energy share from 1% to more than 10% during his 2018–2022 presidency. Duque will share perspectives on successfully implementing pro-environmental policies amid challenging circumstances. Registration for the in-person event is open. The series is co-sponsored by the 2030 Project and includes subsequent speakers such as Katherine Hamilton on Sept. 11.
He oversaw the country's dramatic expansion of renewable energy - from 1% of national energy production to more than 10% in four years - when he served as president of Colombia from 2018-2022.
