Fight Food Waste This Holiday Season
"I work on the circular economy, so consumption, waste, and broadly speaking, food, fits into that. My background is in the world of stuff: I made scenery and costumes for many years and threw away so much that I got sick of the waste. Through that, I got heavily involved in circularity through repair and reuse. I think circularity is one of the most powerful tools in our climate toolkit and one of the most underutilized."
"The holiday season is marked by folks gathering to celebrate traditions and connect over special meals. Yet it can be difficult to feel festive when considering the environmental impact of food waste. According to Feeding America, a nonprofit that has over 200 food banks in the U.S., 38 percent of all food goes unsold or uneaten. That's a staggering statistic, particularly in a time of increased food insecurity,"
"I've been reading and following the food movement for many years because I love food. My mom is French and there's a kind of built-in resistance to waste in French culture, especially as seen in my French grandmother, who lived through World War II. I remember my French grandmother washing the tin foil and putting it back in the drawer-you don't waste food, you don't waste tinfoil."
Holiday gatherings generate substantial food waste, with Feeding America estimating 38 percent of food goes unsold or uneaten and SNAP reductions risking nearly six billion meals. Circular-economy principles connect consumption, production, reuse, and waste reduction across both food and non-food systems. Repair, reuse, and conservation practices reduce waste and associated climate impacts and remain underutilized. Cultural habits that resist waste—such as saving and reusing materials—demonstrate how household practices can change consumption. Shifting habits at personal, local, and systemic levels can decrease waste, mitigate food insecurity, and lessen environmental harm.
