"England faces widespread drought next year without a wet winter, the Environment Agency has cautioned. Yorkshire and the Midlands remain in drought following a dry spring and summer, and a run of heatwaves, while swathes of the country are still in "exceptionally dry conditions." The North West is currently recovering. Drought is declared over only when water levels are fully replenished."
England risks widespread drought next year if winter rainfall remains below average, according to the Environment Agency. Yorkshire and the Midlands remain in drought after a very dry spring and summer and a run of heatwaves, while large areas are still in exceptionally dry conditions. The North West is showing recovery, but drought is only declared over when water levels are fully replenished. From January to October the country received about 83% of average rainfall, experiencing the driest spring in 132 years and the hottest summer on record. Continued dryness increases the likelihood of hosepipe bans, damage to crops and wildlife, wildfires, and heightened flash-flood risk when heavy rain occurs.
