Engine upheaval: West Side residents steamed over Academy buses idling-exemption bid
"Adding to its idle behavior, the company is simultaneously seeking an exemption from NYC's anti-idling regulations. Academy submits this application for your consideration because Academy has done what it can to eliminate unnecessary idling and to reduce the impact of the emissions our buses produce, the bus company wrote in its variance request to the NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) in September."
"Climate control, wheelchair lifts and onboard cameras are some of the systems that need to stay on when a bus is idling, Academy wrote in the application. amNewYork contacted Academy to further inquire about their request and is awaiting a response. A spokesperson for the DEP, which enforces the city's anti-idling laws, confirmed that Academy's variance request is pending and still under review."
Residents near West 30th Street between 9th and 10th Avenues report that Academy charter and tour buses regularly leave engines running while idling, creating noise and emissions. Academy has applied to the NYC Department of Environmental Protection for a variance, stating that some idling is necessary to power climate control, wheelchair lifts, onboard cameras and other federally required systems. The DEP confirmed the variance request is pending, said it is considering hearing comments and is evaluating electrification or auxiliary power units as alternatives. Academy's use of the neighborhood for idling is unclear, and the company was contacted for further comment.
