""We know private car VMT is going up, but it's kind of hard to explain,""
""[Instacart] could be contributing.""
Nearly all Instacart grocery deliveries are completed by private cars rather than two-wheeled vehicles, with only one in ten orders small enough for e-bikes or mopeds. Instacart reported that 99 percent of shoppers registered on the platform have a full-sized motor vehicle available for shopping. The Department of Consumer and Worker Protection estimated about 20,000 grocery delivery workers in the city earn poverty wages. Private driving accounts for 80 percent of vehicle miles traveled in New York City, and VMT rose 16 percent from 2005 to 2023. No system currently tracks how many Instacart delivery trips contribute to VMT.
