China goes electric, but can it get off coal?
"In January and February 2026 alone, China added 20 gigawatts of coal-fired power capacity nearly half the amount of new renewables added over the same period. This partly explains why the country is not on track to meet its 2060 carbon neutrality goal, according to climate think tank, Carbon Tracker."
China added nearly 450 GW of clean energy capacity in 2025, with solar and wind additions far exceeding the rest of the world combined. Wind and solar generation now accounts for about a quarter of electricity production, supported by large farms across mountains, deserts, rooftops, and offshore areas. China reached its 2030 target of adding 1,200 GW of wind and solar capacity five years early. It produces over 80% of the world’s photovoltaic panels, lowering costs and accelerating global adoption. Electrification and fossil fuel-free vehicles expanded quickly, yet coal remains central to energy self-reliance. China added 20 GW of coal-fired capacity in early 2026, contributing to concerns about missing its 2060 carbon neutrality goal.
