Chilly start to the year as temperatures could drop as low as -3C this weekend
"If rain does come across the country - it's a bit uncertain, but if that does happen - the rain, as it meets the cold air, could fall as sleet or snow for a short time before it turns back to rain, he said."
"The overall story is that its going to be very cold over the weekend, with some wintry showers from today onwards, predominantly in Ulster, maybe north Connacht, north Leinster, and a few of them could be of sleet or snow at times, especially at night. There will be frost on each of the nights. Overall, it is a very cold start to 2026."
Temperatures will reach 2–6°C today and drop to −2–2°C overnight with widespread frost and icy patches. Frost may linger in sheltered areas and create difficult driving conditions, so motorists are advised to take care when travelling. Frost is forecast to be slow to clear tomorrow morning, with isolated rain and sleet possible in the north and north‑west. Overnight lows could fall to −3°C. Most areas will remain quite dry with sunny spells on Sunday, though scattered rain, sleet and possible snow will affect Ulster. Early-week forecasts are more uncertain, and any arriving rain could briefly fall as sleet or snow before changing back to rain.
