Buyer's choice: how collectors factor into the art world's quest for environmental sustainability
Briefly

Environmental accountability in the art world has been slow, largely due to reliance on financial budgets and guidelines. Recently, there have been shifts toward sustainable practices, particularly in fine-art logistics. As revealed in a 2023 Gallery Climate Coalition survey, shipping companies offer green alternatives such as reusable crates and more time-efficient shipping options to reduce emissions. Collectors, like Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza and Adam Green, prioritize sustainability in their practices. However, despite interest, many shipping companies report that their sustainable options are underutilized.
"Sustainability is not a peripheral concern; it's central to how I approach collecting," says Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza, an art collector and founder of TBA21.
"Many of my clients are conscious of their environmental impact, so we actively explore ways to make more sustainable choices when it comes to shipping," says the art adviser Adam Green.
Despite apparent enthusiasm, shipping companies are reporting that their sustainable alternatives are not always being used.
All surveyed shipping companies offer alternatives to air freight and many are using reusable crates, focusing on lower emission shipping methods.
