The EPA has canceled a $3 million grant to El Puente, a nonprofit based in South Williamsburg, undermining a planned initiative aimed at enhancing community participation in environmental decision-making. The initiative was designed to help underrepresented residents engage with local policy discussions, particularly about climate resilience. This decision, attributed to a change in funding priorities under the Trump administration, effectively halts El Puente's ongoing efforts to advocate for environmental improvements, thus impacting residents in NYCHA developments and local schools.
The people impacted should be the people making decisions, said Asenhat Gómez, interim executive director of El Puente.
The EPA terminated the grant in May, citing a shift in funding priorities under President Donald Trump and newly appointed EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin.
