Fatou Kiné Gueye, an M.P.A. student at Columbia's SIPA, is deeply motivated to protect the environment due to her heritage in Senegal. Her childhood connection to the ocean, influenced by her father's agricultural knowledge, ignited her passion for environmental issues. After working as an environmental consultant, she recognized the critical need for better leadership and policy frameworks in Senegal. This realization prompted her to pursue environmental policy, and through her SIPA experience, she appreciates the interdisciplinary approach to tackle various environmental issues, enhancing her commitment to climate action.
SIPA has shown me that I don't have to limit myself to one area. I can explore environmental justice, energy, water and ocean-related issues all within the same space.
Initially, I wanted to work in marine conservation because of my love for the ocean. But, when I worked as an environmental consultant in Senegal, I realized that while our country has immense potential and resources, we lack the leadership and structural systems needed to manage them effectively.
