The Department of Transportation delayed installation of planned protected bike lanes on Brooklyn and Kingston avenues between East New York Avenue and Winthrop Street, including two block-long sections on Rutland Road and Winthrop Street, pushing the project to sometime next year. A DOT spokesperson cited non-specific "capacity constraints" as the reason. The project had been reduced from an original design that would have extended lanes north to Empire Boulevard after local opposition. Despite prior assurances the curtailed design would be installed by the end of 2025, the new delay prevents the first protected bike infrastructure in that part of Brooklyn since the Eastern Parkway path.
