"The Klamath Indigenous Land Trust recently purchased 10,000 acres along the Klamath River, signifying one of the largest Indigenous-led private land purchases in U.S. history as salmon continue to make their historic return to the newly revived watershed. The expansive property, located mostly in California and extending into Oregon, includes the sites of reservoirs that existed up until the removal of four of the Klamath's dams in 2023 and 2024."
"KILT's $10 million acquisition was funded entirely through private donations, according to Molli Myers, a Karuk tribal member and president of KILT's board of directors. "The support for land back from philanthropy right now is pretty epic, and we're really excited about it," Myers told SFGATE by phone Monday. "We saw this opportunity and thought that this would be a great way to build on the momentum of dam removal and to keep pushing for tribal people.""
Klamath Indigenous Land Trust purchased 10,000 acres along the Klamath River, mostly in California and extending into Oregon, including former reservoir sites after removal of four dams in 2023 and 2024. PacifiCorp owned the parcel for a century and partnered with the land trust to complete the transfer while retaining an easement to operate power lines. The $10 million acquisition was funded entirely through private donations. Cold-water salmon spawning habitat exists throughout the rivers and streams on the property. KILT plans to work with tribal governments on stream restoration, reintroduction of cultural burns, and Indigenous-led land management.
