PL to debut semi-automated technology this season
Briefly

The Premier League will introduce semi-automated VAR offside technology (SAOT) during Matchweek 32 from April 12-14, 2025, after a unanimous vote by clubs last year. Delays pushed the launch timeline, initially set for after an international break in 2024. The new system aims to speed up offside checks, reducing delays by an average of 31 seconds. The technology was already trialed in some FA Cup matches, though initial tests faced challenges, including a lengthy VAR review. Premier League officials express confidence in the system’s accuracy and future potential despite early setbacks.
The system that we've adopted, we believe it to be the best system. We believe it to be the most accurate and the most futureproof system as well and that's why we went with that.
I have to confess, given the difficulties that we had over the first few months of the season, I had severe doubts about this, but the progress made over the last four to six weeks has been significant.
