Havering set to get first padel courts at Romford playing fields
Briefly

Havering Council has approved Powerleague Romford's planning application to construct four padel courts at King George Playing Fields. This development will replace two existing five-a-side football pitches. Although there were concerns regarding parking and the impact on football provision, Powerleague contended that statutory consultation with Sport England was unnecessary since they were only removing specific pitches. The planning permission includes several conditions, and the courts will introduce the first padel facilities in Havering, expanding sports options in the area.
Havering Council has allocated planning permission for Powerleague Romford to construct four padel courts at King George Playing Fields, marking an expansion of recreational sports in the area.
Despite objections regarding parking and loss of football facilities, the planning officer recommended approval, indicating that the case may still be escalated to the secretary of state.
Powerleague argued that their plans pertained to a specific playing pitch and did not constitute a loss of the entire playing field, which exempted them from statutory consultation.
Padel, a sport gaining popularity, combines elements of tennis and squash, and the new courts in Romford will add to Powerleague's existing facilities in Birmingham, Manchester, and Shoreditch.
