Galway overpower Kilkenny in Portlaoise to claim Leinster U-20 crown
Galway beat Kilkenny in Portlaoise to add the Leinster U-20 crown to a minor title won two nights earlier. Aaron Niland missed the matchday panel through injury, while Jason Rabbitte played about 30 minutes and was effective without being decisive. With Niland out, Jack Shaughnessy moved to full-forward and took over free-taking, scoring an early goal after good approach play from Vince Morgan. Kilkenny briefly leveled through Ed Lauhoff after Chris Callanan’s save set up Ed McDermott’s shot. Galway then pulled away before half-time with five points in as many minutes, including scores from Michael Burke and Cullen Killeen and a sharp interception and finish by Brian Callanan. After a quieter third quarter, Galway surged with a 1-7 to 0-1 run, capped by Vince Morgan’s goal.
"In Niland's absence, Jack Shaughnessy moved into the full-forward line and also took over the free-taking duties. He whipped in an early goal, on the back of good approach play from Vince Morgan, to give Galway a solid platform while hurling into a slight breeze."
"Kilkenny got back on level terms when Ed Lauhoff swept the sliotar to the net after Chris Callanan's save from Ed McDermott's shot ran kindly, but the game moved away from them in the five minutes before half-time."
"Galway tacked on five points in as many minutes, including a pair from the impressive midfield duo of Michael Burke and Cullen Killeen, as well as a sharp interception and finish from Brian Callanan."
"However, a 1-7 to 0-1 run from then on - crowned by Vince Morgan's goal - saw Galway surge through the finishing tape."
