Jan Vertonghen, the seasoned defender and former Tottenham Hotspur player, has announced his retirement from professional football, effective after the 2024-25 season. Currently at Anderlecht, he has struggled with injuries, making only five appearances this season. Renowned for his time at Spurs, where he made over 300 appearances and reached a Champions League final, Vertonghen retired from international football last year as Belgium's all-time appearance holder. He cited increasing physical difficulties in training and matches as his primary reason for retiring, emphasizing his desire to meet both personal and fan expectations.
"I have noticed that it is becoming more and more difficult to prepare myself physically for training sessions and matches and to show myself as the player I want to be," he said.
"Not only towards the fans and my fellow players, but also towards myself. That is why I will be stopping after this season."
