While the majority of processed student visas are followed correctly by students, there exists a concerning number who exploit their status, evading academic requirements.
In fiscal year 2023, over 51,000 individuals overstayed their visa terms, revealing a significant overstay rate of approximately 3.5%. This raises alarms about visa regulations.
The overstay figures suggest a larger issue, as for every six new international students, one exploited their visa, hinting at potential misuse within the student visa system.
The last presidential administration's restrictive measures had already created a challenging climate for international students, and renewed scrutiny could further dampen enrollment and mobility.
