Republican critics have given Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz the nickname 'Tampon Tim' in response to legislation he signed requiring public schools in Minnesota to provide menstrual products to students in 4th through 12th grades.
The issue of providing menstrual products in schools has gained popularity with 28 states and Washington D.C. passing laws for such access, including Minnesota where the products are free for students.
Despite broad popular support and past actions like eliminating state sales tax on menstrual products, Republicans are focusing on the wording of the legislation, attempting to limit access to only female-assigned and gender-neutral bathrooms.
