Vallejo school district considers closures, consolidations amid enrollment decline
Briefly

The Vallejo City Unified School District's Governing Board conducted a study session to discuss potential school closures and consolidations owing to declining enrollment and financial struggles. Three key proposals are set for a vote on February 19, 2024, including closing Mare Island Health and Fitness Academy while relocating Vallejo Charter School there, reconfiguring Loma Vista Environmental Science Academy for younger grades, or even closing Loma Vista altogether. Future plans for consolidating more schools are on the table for the 2026-27 school year. Superintendent Ruben Aurelio emphasized the importance of prioritizing student success and maintaining fiscal responsibility.
The options include closing Mare Island Health and Fitness Academy and relocating Vallejo Charter School to that campus, reconfiguring Loma Vista Environmental Science Academy to serve grades TK-5, or closing Loma Vista entirely and repurposing the property.
We understand that these decisions significantly affect families, and we remain committed to prioritizing student success and equity throughout this process, said VCUSD Superintendent Ruben Aurelio. Our goal is to maintain fiscal responsibility while providing high-quality educational opportunities.
Three proposals, aimed at taking effect in the 2025-26 school year, will be voted on at the Feb. 19 board meeting.
Future plans for consolidating additional schools, such as Pennycook Elementary and Steffan Mano Elementary, are being considered for the 2026-27 school year and beyond.
