Top London school's success came at too high a cost for some pupils - safeguarding review
"A high-performing London academy achieved success at too high a cost for some pupils, a local safeguarding review has found, after allegations of emotional harm to some students. The local child safeguarding practice review into Mossbourne Victoria Park Academy (MVPA) in Hackney found shouting at pupils was routine, and rigid behaviour policy application sometimes fails to adjust for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (Send)."
"Shouting was found to be routine rather than exceptional practice at the academy, the review found, and said shouting has been used in a manner that humiliates and intimidates pupils. Pupils are placed at desks in corridors as punishment for minor infractions, and rigid application of the school's behaviour policy sometimes fails to make reasonable adjustments for pupils with Send, the review added."
Mossbourne Victoria Park Academy achieved high academic performance while routine shouting and rigid behaviour policies harmed some pupils. Shouting was used in ways that humiliated and intimidated pupils, and placing pupils at desks in corridors was used as punishment for minor infractions. Pupils with special educational needs and disabilities were sometimes punished for behaviours linked to their needs because reasonable adjustments were not made. Leadership adopted a defensive posture and governors failed to hold leaders accountable, allowing harmful practices to persist unchecked. The Mossbourne Federation needs to balance academic rigour with greater flexibility and compassion and strengthen governance to ensure a nurturing, safe culture for every pupil.
