Third-level students warned to be wary of scammers as they look for college accommodation

Threshold has launched its annual 'Scamwatch' campaign to raise awareness of scams targeting incoming students, urging them to report suspicious accommodation ads.

Cat Clark, Threshold's campaigns officer, emphasized the importance of vigilance among students in the rental market, encouraging them to reach out for support if scammed.

Laura Harmon from ICOS highlighted that international students face language barriers, making them more susceptible to scams, particularly when using social networks to find accommodation.

A survey indicated that 13% of over 800 students had already fallen victim to accommodation scams, highlighting the urgent need for awareness.
