Four institutions have indicated their intention to leave the Mountain West for the Pac-12 by the 2026-27 academic year. The financial implications for the departing schools include an exit fee of approximately $18 million should they provide two years' notice, which they are prepared to handle. Interestingly, this amount doubles to $36 million if they only give one year's notice, creating a strategic financial consideration for these institutions as they plan their transition to the Pac-12.
Pac-12's strategy indicates a willingness to assist these schools with their exit fees, funded partially by withheld media rights distributions from previous members. Upon the acceptance of these four schools, the Pac-12 will still need to secure two additional members to meet the NCAA's minimum requirements for conference membership.
