A shooting occurred at the Islamic Center of San Diego while children were in classrooms and at recess. A teacher’s assistant locked the classroom door, turned off lights, silenced communications, and hid under a desk with a coworker. Nearby preschool children also hid silently in corners following drill protocols. A security guard, Amin Abdullah, radioed the lockdown, returned fire, and helped prevent two teenage gunmen from reaching about 140 children and 20 staff members nearby. Police evacuated staff and students and passed Abdullah’s body. Other people were killed, including the mosque store manager and a man who ran over when he heard shots. The attack is being investigated as a hate crime, and the guard’s daughter described him as a role model and best friend.
"My dad was my role model and my best friend, she said. She shared that she had just received her teaching credentials last week, and her father couldn't be there because he was working at the center. He was even afraid to go take meal breaks because he was afraid something would happen if he stepped away from the Islamic center, Abdullah told the crowd through tears."
