San Diego State University (SDSU) has achieved R1 classification by the Carnegie Foundation, joining prestigious institutions like Harvard and MIT. This recognition confirms that SDSU meets the criteria of spending over $50 million on research and awarding at least 70 doctoral degrees. Achieving R1 status significantly boosts SDSU's ability to attract federal and private funding, aiding in interdisciplinary collaborations. SDSU previously held an R2 classification but aimed for a higher status to enhance its reputation nationally, especially under President Adela de la Torre's leadership since 2018, focusing on research grants and faculty recruitment.
"R1 status enhances our ability to secure increased funding, attract talent and expand interdisciplinary collaborations," said Hala Madanat, SDSU's vice president for research and innovation.
"Moving to R1 is not just a milestone, it's a launch pad," Cristal Zuniga, a biology professor, remarked about the implications of achieving this classification.
