Pro-Palestinian Student Protesters Are Enacting the Highest Ideals of Education
Briefly

April 30, 2024, was the 56th anniversary of Columbia University calling in the police to arrest 700 students who had taken over Hamilton Hall in protest against racism and the war on Vietnam. Sadly, Columbia University is not alone in calling in police to shut down peaceful Gaza encampments spreading on campuses.
As a professor of education, I am troubled by colleges handling student protests, abandoning their mission to educate. Instead of punishing student protesters, they could recognize them as educators, engaged teachers and learners.
Student protesters are educating through their questions, challenging hegemonic narratives and addressing historical contexts like the Nakba, occupation, and apartheid in the Gaza conflict.
