Islington Council decided to close Blessed Sacrament RC Primary School due to low enrollment caused by a declining birth rate and people relocating. The school had just six pupils in its reception class out of a possible 30, with only 76 pupils out of a potential 210 in total.
Financial concerns played a significant role in the closure decision, as the council estimated a loss of 5,500 for every unused pupil place in Islington. Despite the school's favorable rating from Ofsted, the low enrollment and one-form entry left few options but to proceed with closure.
The closure plans faced opposition during consultation, with the Diocese of Westminster expressing disagreement despite the school having a balanced budget. An application for academy status in collaboration with CHAT was previously mentioned as a strategy to prevent closure.
